Nail Shapes Before you begin filing your client’s nails, look at the shape of their hands, length of the fingers, and the shape of the cuticles. Here are some common nail shapes:
SQUOVAL Squoval nails should extend only slightly past the tip of the finger with the free edge rounded off. The full width of the nail remains at the free edge.
ROUND Round nails should be slightly tapered and extend just a bit past the tip of the finger.
OVAL Oval nails look good on most women’s hands. It is a square nail with slightly rounded corners.
POINTED Pointed nails are suited to thin hands with narrow nail beds. The nail is tapered somewhat longer than usual to enhance the slender appearance of the hand; however, these nails can be weak and break easily; so be sure to offer strengthening nail care.
SQUARE Square nails are completely straight across with no rounding at the edges. The length depends on the client’s preference.
Nail Filing Techniques
ORLY SIGNATURE SERVICES After removing old lacquer, file and shape the nails while they’re dry. Never file nails after they’ve been soaking because soaking makes nails soft and break or split easily when filed. Trim longer nails with a fingernail clipper. Your choice of files should be a fine grit, 240 grit or higher, to prevent shredding or damaging the free edge of the natural nails. File flat to the tip and do not angle the file as you shape. You want the tip of the nail to be as thick as possible for strength, and filing at an angle will weaken the edge. Side by side filling is OK if you don’t file aggressively. Start with a slight flat spot in the center of the tip’s edge and use that spot to shape evenly. Or, you can file in one direction from each side to the center of the nail.
